Wild card games have been around for a long time and are very popular with some players.  By definition, a wild card is a card designated wild and can act as any other card in a poker hand.  Video poker has two primary types of wild cards.

  • Deuces – All deuces (4), regardless of suit, act as wild cards and can have the value and suit of any card in a standard 52-card deck.

  • Joker – An extra card is added to the deck giving it 53 cards.  The additional card is a Joker, which is wild.

Wild card video poker games can be fun and exciting to play.  Including wild cards allows the opportunity to hit exciting hands only available in wild card games.

This book describes the seven most popular wild card games in casinos today.  These are:

  • Deuces Wild (DW) is the most popular wild card video poker game.  The game is played like other forms of draw poker, where five cards are initially dealt, and the player chooses which to keep.

  • Deuces Wild Bonus (DWB) is a popular variant of Deuces Wild and is growing in popularity as players become familiar with the game.  This game gives higher payouts on all 5-of-a-Kind hands and adds a new hand of 4 deuces plus an Ace.

  • Deuces Wild Double Bonus (DWDB) is another variation over and above the higher payouts for Deuces Wild Bonus.  The payout for 5 Aces is doubled to 800 credits.  Five 3s, 4s, or 5s payouts increase from 200 to 250 credits.

  • Loose Deuces (LD) is yet another variant of Deuces Wild.  In this game, a higher payout is awarded for a hand of 4 deuces, paying 2,500 credits compared to 1,000 for Deuces Wild.  Other minor variations exist for lower payout hands, but the 4 deuces payout is the primary driver for this game.

  • Joker Poker - Kings or Better (JP-K) adds a 53rd card (a Joker), and making it wild gives excitement and anticipation to video poker.  The game is played like other video poker games, with five initial cards dealt.  This most common Joker Poker game requires a pair of Kings or better to qualify for a winning hand, thus the name Joker Poker – Kings or Better (JP-K).

  • Joker Poker – 2 Pair or Better (JP-2P) is a variation of Joker Poker.  It's played exactly like the Kings or Better version but requires 2 pair or better for a winning hand.  The attraction of this game is that a Natural Royal Flush pays 5,000 credits versus 4,000 for other games.

  • Joker Poker – Atlantic City (JP-AC) was popular in Atlantic City at one time, thus the name.  It's unclear whether this game is still popular there.  It’s included as one of the seven games discussed in this book.

This is the author's 4th book in his series titled Video Poker Heaven.  I decided to write a book focused strictly on wild card games.  Many (short) articles are written on wild card games, but my research discovered nothing comprehensive on this topic.  As a result, I decided my final book in the series would focus on the details of playing the most popular wild card video poker games available today.  Thus, the title Wild Card Video Poker.
